Trained as a painter, he designed hundreds of prints of birds in snow, rain and moonlight, many of them made for collectors in Europe and America. From 1926 he worked with the Tokyo publisher Watanabe Shozaburo, leader of the shin-hanga movement, signing his prints Shoson.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEach print is a Japanese colour woodblock: the design was cut into a separate block of cherry wood for every colour and printed by hand with water-based pigments on mulberry paper, the printer wiping the block to give the soft graded skies and falling snow that are Koson's signature.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eReproduced from a high-resolution scan of an original impression in the Rijksmuseum, printed whole to the edge of the sheet with Koson's signature and seals.
