The 1901 Mors racing car won Paris-Bordeaux in the hands of Henri Fournier, 527 km at 85.3 km an hour, and then Paris-Berlin, again with Fournier, 1,106 km in 15 hours 33 minutes at 71.1 km an hour.

Mors was a Paris electrical engineering firm that turned to motor cars in the 1890s, and its racing cars took the great town-to-town races between 1900 and 1903.

Ernest Montaut (1878-1909) more or less invented the motor-racing print. Working in Paris in the first decade of the century, he drew the cars at full stretch, raked forward, with the road streaming away behind them and dust boiling off the wheels - a way of showing speed that motoring artists have borrowed ever since.

This plate comes from Montaut's album "10 ans de courses: les marques victorieuses 1897-1907" - ten years of racing and the marques that won it. Each plate records one victory from the great town-to-town races and Gordon Bennett contests, with the result printed on the tissue guard laid over it, and the plates were coloured by hand.

Prepared from a high-resolution scan of the original hand-coloured plate, trimmed to the image and a margin of its own sheet. Printed on archival cotton-fibre paper when your order is placed, and mounted with a border of equal width on every side so the plate sits centred in the frame.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0886/6414/6261/files/gallery-0_9c0ae5f1-ac35-4d05-8787-59a81101f322.jpg?v=1792767656
