Évian-les-Bains grew up around the Cachat spring on the French shore of Lake Geneva, where water filtered for years through glacial sand emerges naturally mineralised. The spa made the town's fortune in the nineteenth century; the bottled water made its name worldwide in the twentieth.

The Cachat spring gave Évian its water and its name, and by the 1930s the bottle had travelled far further than the spa ever would. Posters like this one were selling a table water to people who would never take the cure - the moment a health resort turned into a brand.

Trained as an architect at the École des Beaux-Arts, René Vincent brought a draughtsman's precision to commercial art and became one of the defining illustrators of the French motoring age. He worked for Peugeot, Bugatti, Michelin and the oil companies, and his elongated, sharply observed figures capture the between-the-wars bourgeoisie at its most self-assured.

Restored from a high-resolution scan of an original lithograph, with the scanning marks and mount board removed so that only the poster itself is printed. Printed to order on cotton-fibre archival paper, with optional mounting and hand-finished framing in our own workshop.
