Winter sports arrived in France as a mass pastime between the wars, once the railways worked out that the same Alpine lines they filled in August could be filled again in February. Resorts were built or rebranded at speed, and the poster was the industry's chief instrument - selling not a place so much as an idea of health, speed and clean cold air.

Hauff was a German photographic manufacturer whose plates and roll film were sold across Europe between the wars. Its advertising went where the cameras went, and the winter-sports season - bright light, white ground, holidaymakers wanting proof they had been there - was the obvious target.

Reproduced from a high-resolution scan of an original printing, cleaned of mounting and scanning artefacts so nothing but the poster reaches the paper. Each print is made to order on heavyweight cotton-fibre archival paper. Mounts and frames are cut and finished by hand in our workshop.
