853e Victoire Grand prix de Pau - an original poster, 1950.
Pau looks straight out at the Pyrenees from its terrace in Béarn, a town that has been a wintering resort for the British since the 1840s. Its Grand Prix has been run on closed streets through the middle of it since 1933, which makes it one of the oldest surviving street circuits anywhere - tight, walled and unforgiving.
Grand Prix racing in France was run on closed public roads long before purpose-built circuits were normal, which is why the posters look like town advertisements rather than sports bills - the event and the place were the same thing. A win carried straight into the following season's sales, and the manufacturers made sure of it.
Worked up from a high-resolution scan of an original impression, with mount board and scanning marks taken out so only the artwork is printed. Made to order on cotton-fibre archival paper, with mounting and framing done in-house so the finish matches the print.
