The Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne ran from May to November 1937 across the Trocadéro and both banks of the Seine. It is remembered now for the pavilions that faced each other down - and for Picasso's Guernica, shown there for the first time - but it was above all the last great world's fair before the war.

Born in Livorno and settled in Paris from 1898, Leonetto Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising. He began as a theatrical caricaturist, and he broke with the decorative Art Nouveau poster by throwing a single arresting figure against a flat dark ground - an image built to register instantly on someone passing on a tram rather than to reward close study.
