Rodolphe Salis opened the Chat Noir in Montmartre in 1881 and effectively invented the modern cabaret: poetry, shadow-puppet theatre, music and calculated irreverence in one room. Its touring company took the formula around France, and the posters announcing it are the reason the place is still a byword for Belle Époque Paris.

Swiss-born and Montmartre to the bone, Théophile Steinlen spent his career drawing the street life of working Paris, its cabarets and above all its cats. His posters for Rodolphe Salis's Chat Noir are among the most recognisable images of the Belle Époque, and his sympathies - he drew constantly for the radical press - run visibly through the work.

Prepared from a high-resolution scan of an original lithographic poster, flattened and trimmed to the sheet so the design prints edge to edge. Printed on archival cotton-fibre paper to order, and available mounted or framed - both cut to size in our own workshop.
